Is Labiaplasty Right For You?
Labiaplasty is becoming a popular procedure among women that want to reduce the size of the labia. It is an outpatient procedure, typically taking about one hour. This can be performed safely in the office under local anesthesia or in the operating room with general anesthesia. The procedure can be combined with liposuction and fat grafting to add volume to the labia majora improving the overall size, shape, function, and appearance of the external vaginal area. Labiaplasty offers both cosmetic and functional benefits, and we can discuss the procedure in more detail during your consultation.
There are a number of vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty techniques available for patients, each tailored to match the needs of each individual patient. The procedure heals rapidly and naturally, leaving virtually imperceptible scars.
Labia Minora – To reshape the labia minora (inner layers of skin around the vaginal opening), a wedge excision can be performed to reduce the excessive skin. Rim excisions can also be performed to reduce excess akin along the entire length of the labia minora, but may not leave as natural of a labial edge.
Labia Majora – To recontour the labia majora (outer fold of the genital area) an excision of the inner portion of the skin is performed. This is done to better hide the incisions in the natural fold between the labia majora and minora.
Clitoral Hood Reduction – Individuals that have excess skin covering the clitoris, can have a clitoral hood reduction procedure. This is a minor procedure that reduces excessive skin around and covering the clitoris. This can be performed in conjunction with another vaginal rejuvenation procedure. Aside from the benefit of an improved appearance, some patients experience better sensation.
Fat Grafts for the Labia Majora – Fat and volume is a sign of youth, and with age or weight loss, some patients can experience a loose or emptier appearance to the labia majora. This can be re-volumized with the addition of fat grafts, restoring a youthful appearance to the vulva.
Candidates – Women who seek vaginal rejuvenation range in age from 18 to their 60. These are individuals who are seeking improvement in both form and function of their genitals. Some individuals have experienced labial elongation with childbirth or deflation with weight loss, or just changes over time. Others have always had some degree of excess skin and wish they could do something about it. Most patients seek increased comfort in and out of their clothing.
Recovery – Recovery from your labiaplasty is only a few days off work, and avoidance of sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks. It’s also recommended that you avoid use of tampons, avoid tight clothing and properly cleanse the area daily, and apply antibiotic ointment to the incisions twice daily for five days postoperatively.
